112 – European Emergency Number Day

Today we celebrate European Emergency Number 112 Day.

Every second matters. That’s why 112 is more than just a hotline – it is a system that truly saves lives.

For over 15 years, a solution has been operating in Poland that has dramatically accelerated the response of emergency services: the integration of the 112 System with the Location and Information Platform PLI-CBD, implemented by T4B Sp. z o.o. on behalf of the Office of Electronic Communications (UKE).

What does the platform change in practice?

  • the caller’s location is automatically transmitted to emergency services: ambulance, police, and fire brigade
  • responders know where to go before the person in need provides an address
  • response time has been reduced to a minimum – and often seconds determine life or death

The 112 number is free of charge and works throughout the EU, including from phones without a SIM card or with a locked screen. In Poland, over 20 million calls are handled annually, with approximately 1.6–1.7 million reports per month (Ministry of Interior and Administration data, 2024).

Each year, this number increases by around 1 million. Approximately 40% of 112 calls concern traffic and road incidents. The average time for an operator to answer a call – and thus determine the caller’s location – is only 3–4 seconds.

The PLI-CBD platform is an example of technology that provides real support in crisis situations – where every moment counts.

Today is a good opportunity to remember this, because safety relies on efficient communication.
